Eric Carlson has just passed the New York hunter safety test and has big plans to go hunting with his best friend but when he arrives home he his Stunned by the fact that his parents have been called into the army reserve in Afghanistan and wont be able to hunt with his friend but where will he go? Fortuna North Dakota,to live with his grandparents that hes never met. He will meet a friend and run away and  try to survive the wilderness by hunting pheasants and living off the land.
