Complex Sentences


  • Complex Sentence- A complex sentence is when you have an independent and dependent clause in a sentence.
  • Independent Clause- Can stand alone 
  • Dependent Clause- Can't stand alone(needs help) Starts with a subordinating conjunction.  
  • You use a comma if it starts with a dependent clause. Example: Because my friend has the flu, she can't go to school today. 
Examples: Need a comma
1. Because it is below zero outside, we have to stay inside for recess.
2. When I had pneumonia, I had to stay home for a week.
3. Because Weston ran away, I need to watch him when he's outside.

Examples: Don't need a comma
1. We have to stay inside for recess because it is below zero outside.
2. I had to stay home for a week when I broke my rib.
3. Alyah had to come with me because I had gymnastics practice.
